The 1992 Royal Rumble was the 4th annual Royal Rumble event, that took place in the Knickerbocker Arena in Troy, New York on 19th January 1992.

The event is widely held up as one of the top Royal Rumbles of all time, as Ric Flair lasted just short of an hour to win the match, last eliminating Sid Justice, to become the new WWF Champion. The title was declared vacant by on-screen President Jack Tunney after a controversial finish to the Hulk Hogan/The Undertaker title match at the Tuesday in Texas event in December 1991. The event is remembered for Bobby Heenan’s commentary, which is biased towards Ric Flair, and set up a Sid Justice vs Hulk Hogan Wrestlemania main event.

Did You Know?

  • This is the first Royal Rumble with actual stakes: the winner became WWF World Heavyweight Champion. Every other Royal Rumble since (bar the Greatest Royal Rumble) had stakes.
  • This Royal Rumble had the first instance of preferential numbers being drawn. Hulk Hogan & The Undertaker were given a choice between 20 and 30, due to them being the previous two World Champions.
  • This event set the record for most previous WWF World Champions with 5 (Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Sgt. Slaughter, Randy Savage & Colonel Mustafa – albeit the last one he was known as The Iron Sheik).
  • Randy Savage famously accidentally eliminated himself accidentally by throwing himself over the top rope to attack Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Commentators Gorilla Monsoon & Bobby “The Brain” Heenan quickly covered him by stating that he needed to be propelled over the top rope to be eliminated. This wasn’t mentioned again.
  • “Rowdy” Roddy Piper competed for two different belts at this event. He won the Intercontinental Championship from The Mountie earlier that night, but was eliminated by Sid Justice in this match.
  • They used a similar graphic style in the poster as the previous years. They re-used that style for the 2001 Royal Rumble.
