Introduction
We’re a fair way through the attitude era when the Royal Rumble took place in California for the second time in 2 years. In the main event – Mr. McMahon last eliminated “Stone Cold” Steve Austin to win the Royal Rumble. McMahon was put into the match as the number 2 entrant by commissioner Shawn Michaels. Although winning the rumble, McMahon sacrificed his place at Wrestlemania’s main event at the next month’s pay per view, losing to Steve Austin in a cage match. Austin then went on to win the title from The Rock at Wrestlemania 15.
Although in the midst of the hottest period in wrestling, the 1999 Royal Rumble is not remembered fondly, as it was a bit pedestrian with a lot of filler. Elsewhere in the card The Rock brutally beat Mankind to win the WWF Championship, a title they would hot potato over the next month.

- This Royal Rumble saw the first entrant of a woman in the match – Chyna got the lucky number 30 by winning the “Corporate” Rumble on Raw earlier that year.
- This Royal Rumble was the second time there has been the PPV event in the same state back to back (California). Florida hosted the 1990 and 1991 event.
- This match saw the second time that the last two competitors were the same as the first two. The first time this occurred was in 1995.
