Introduction

New Orleans hosted their first Royal Rumble in the 2001 variant of the event. At the event, it was something relatively unique: there were about 5 or 6 genuine individuals who could have won. In the end: “Stone Cold” Steve Austin last eliminated Kane to win the match and go on to headline Wrestlemania X7.

This event began a mini hot period as the attitude era came to a close, as along with 1992, this Royal Rumble is considered to be one of the best. Stand out performer of the match was Kane, who set a most eliminations in one match record with 11. A record that stood for 13 years, before Roman Reigns achieved the feat of eliminating 12 in one match. This hot period ended with Wrestlemania X7, where Steve Austin turned on The Rock and became the new WWF World Heavyweight champion.

Did You Know?

  • This Royal Rumble featured the first ever celebrity entrant. Drew Carey entered the match in place of one of the members of Lo Down. Ironically if Chaz (Mosh) was selected to be Lo Down’s representative it’d be the third time he would potentially be in the match but his tag team partner wasn’t in 3 years!
  • This marked the second time that weapons were used in the Royal Rumble match.
  • Like last year, this year was the first and only time that the logo design was used. The poster design, however, returned to the iconic posters used in the 1991 and 1992 Royal Rumbles.
  • By winning this match, Stone Cold becomes the first (and as of 2023 – only) three time winner of the Royal Rumble.
  • This match saw Hulk Hogan’s records of most eliminations in a single Royal Rumble (10 in 1989) and cumulative eliminations in a Royal Rumble (27) beaten. Kane eliminated 11 participants in this match, and Steve Austin had 29 cumulative eliminations by the end of the match.
