Introduction
The 2006 Royal Rumble, returning to Miami, had a very gladiatorial theme associated with it, with the set design with such a theme. In the match itself – Rey Mysterio – who had the sympathetic push due to the death of Eddie Guerrero the year before – last eliminated Randy Orton to become #1 contender to Angle’s World Championship, a match he won at Wrestlemania.

- This is the first Royal Rumble post brand split that had “surprise” entrants, not affiliated with either Raw nor Smackdown. Although both competitors (Tatanka & Goldust) were signed by the WWE.
- Rey Mysterio set a record for the longest time in a Royal Rumble. That would remain in place until Gunther beat it in 2023.
- This is the first time two competitors had survived over 1 hour. Triple H also lasted 1 hour.
- This was the first year for 8 years where the Royal Rumble match didn’t go on last. Kurt Angle main evented against Mark Henry. The first time two former Olympians had headlined a WWE Pay Per View.
