Introduction

The 2009 Royal Rumble took place in Detroit for the first time in it’s history, coming from the Joe Louis Arena in late January.

The story behind the match was the Legacy faction. Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase Jr. entered the match and largely dominated – all 3 in the final 4 competitors against Triple H. Although The Game was able to eliminate DiBiase & Rhodes, Orton ended up winning the match, although his title match was unsuccessful at Wrestlemania 25, losing to Triple H who became World Champion at the next month’s No Way Out.

Famously, this match saw the record set by one of the competitors – Santino Marella lasted in the match for one second, becoming the quickest elimination in the match’s history.
