Introduction
After 2 rather poor years, The Royal Rumble in 2016 was considered one of the best of the 2010s. In the match itself, Triple H returned to the ring to become WWE Champion, after Mr. McMahon had stated that Reigns must defend the title in the Royal Rumble, and start from the number 1 position.
A chaotic wonder of a match, the stage was set for surprises when AJ Styles, a world champion from all over the world, entered the match at the third spot. Another major surprise was Sami Zayn – who was an NXT regular – made his main roster debut eliminating his friend/foe Kevin Owens.
Chris Jericho had another strong match, being the true iron man of the contest, and it also marked the return to the Royal Rumble match of 2002 winner Brock Lesnar. However he was eliminated by another name with a very strong showing: Braun Strowman.

Did You Know?
- This match is the third time last year’s winner has entered first, with Steve Austin in 1999 and The Undertaker in 2008 all preceding it.
- Furthermore, it is also the second time the last two in the previous year’s rumble entered 1 and 2, with 2008 Royal Rumble being started by The Undertaker & Shawn Michaels.
- This is the first time the WWE Title has been on the line in the Royal Rumble match since the 1992 Royal Rumble, although the first time the champion has had to defend it in the match itself (in that match, the winner was awarded the title).
- This was the only Royal Rumble to have this logo, with it changing for the 2017 Royal Rumble. Oddly it used a similar classical livery for the 2006 Royal Rumble.
