The showcase of the immortals – Wrestlemania – is this weekend! The 40th iteration of the event is taking place in Philadelphia. From the Royal Rumble, the main event for the men is Cody Rhodes who won the men’s event taking on Roman Reigns for the WWE Undisputed Championship, and on the women’s side Bayley is facing her former Damage CTRL partner Iyo Sky for the WWE Women’s Championship. You can read a the review of both Royal Rumbles here.

However, that was in the past, so as far as blog posts go, recapping the history of a three month PPV/PLE may not be great content. So I thought I’d look at how Philadelphia – the host city – does with Royal Rumbles. Surprisingly, it’s not great!

Royal Rumbles Hosted in Philadelphia

Philadelphia has a bit of a checkered history when it comes to the Royal Rumble. Aside from the 2004 Royal Rumble, it had probably one of the worst Royal Rumbles ever with the 2015 Royal Rumble, where Roman Reigns was anointed by The Rock in the Wells Fargo Center – foreshadowing Wrestlemania 9 years later. The city was treated however to the 2018 Royal Rumble, the first ever Women’s match and two competitors: Shinsuke Nakamura and Asuka winning the match. A bit of a mixed bag for matches. Were you at any of these? Let me know in the comments.

Royal Rumble Participants from Philadelphia

Oddly, despite it’s heritage as a wrestling city, the city of brotherly love doesn’t have a huge amount of successful participants in the Royal Rumble. From checking various sources it appears only 5 entrants in Royal Rumble history have been born in Philadelphia. None of them last more than 10 minutes in total with the “Best” performer being Road Warrior Animal, who claimed along with Hawk the scalp of The Undertaker at the 1991 Royal Rumble.

So yes, despite having a heritage associated with ECW, the actual city doesn’t have a proud tradition when it comes to the Royal Rumble. Nevertheless, Wrestlemania looks like being an excellent card this year. Are you looking forward to it? I know I am!
