Dean Ambrose, along with Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, first Royal Rumble appearance was the 2013 Royal Rumble. He didn’t compete, instead interfering in the main event for CM Punk against The Rock. Ambrose was a key figure in the following year’s Royal Rumble, with a stellar performance alongside his Shield breatheren.
However Ambrose’s best performance was at the 2016 Royal Rumble. Somewhat surprisingly, he finished as the runner up to Triple H: the story was for Reigns and Hunter to square off, but it was Ambrose who faced off against the King of Kings at the end. Teasing a great match we got a bit later at Roadblock.
That was the highlight of Ambrose’s run in the Royal Rumble. Creative frustration including a botched heel turn in 2019 saw the former World Champion depart the WWE, and sign with rivals AEW. He has since gone onto great success with his original character: Jon Moxley.
