Introduction
The Royal Rumble returned for the third time to San Antonio for the 2017 Royal Rumble match. In it, Randy Orton became the 7th man to win the Royal Rumble twice, last eliminating Roman Reigns.
A star studded match – it featured all 6 of the men who would make up the Wrestlemania’s 3 main events – the stand out performers were Chris Jericho who was again Iron Man (though this time he lasted over an hour for the first time), and also Braun Strowman, an outside pick by many, who eliminated 7 men in the match.
Orton would then go on to beat Bray Wyatt for the WWE Championship, but this was post brand split, and other matches saw Roman Reigns beat The Undertaker in the main event of Wrestlemania, and Brock Lesnar defeat the Universal Champion Goldberg.

Did You Know?
- This was the third royal rumble, along with the 1997 and 2007 one, to take place in San Antonio. Of those 3 years, The Undertaker competed in all 3. Frustratingly, he also nearly had the same number in all 3. Sadly he got 29 in this one!
- This was the first Royal Rumble post 2nd brand split. As of 2023 it’s still going.
- This became the first time that two different men became 2 time winners in back to back years. The next time it would occurr would be in 2021 and 2022, when Edge and Brock Lesnar would win the match.
- This Royal Rumble saw a change of logo, a logo that remains in use until this day.
