Introduction
Royal Rumble 1993 came from the ARCO arena, in Sacremento and saw a relative newcomer win the match. Yokozuna, entering from number 27, ended up being fast tracked to the main event of Wrestlemania XI against Bret Hart – who defended his belt successfully against another newcomer: Razor Ramon.
This year saw a lot of change in the WWF with a large number of debutants in the match: nearly half the field had never been in the match before, and over a half would never appear in the match again. It saw 43 year old Bob Backlund last over 1 hour in the match, the first person break that window.
We also saw the debut of “guest” appearances in the match, with two uncontracted wrestlers (Tenryu & Carlos Colon) enter the match. Finally, we saw the introduction of the stipulation that the Royal Rumble winner would be in the main event of Wrestlemania: with the victorious Yokozuna defeating Bret Hart for the WWF Championship at Wrestlemania IX. However, his celebration was short lived, with him losing the belt to a returning Hulk Hogan about 90 seconds later.
